2008 Letter from the Commodore

Sail with us! Make new friends! Picnic! Have FUN!

Valley Sailing Association is a privately operated club located on the wooded shores
of the Mississippi River, near Portage Des Sioux, Missouri.

The tree-covered limestone bluffs on the Illinois shore create a beautiful background
for a mile-wide sailing area in the Mississippi River called Alton Lake, which is perfect
for sailing. Upstream, islands create an interesting cruising area and great spots for picnicking.

Sailing on the river is fun and safe. For most of the summer, flow at the Alton Dam is regulated to provide a steady water level. The resulting minimal current is slow enough to allow leisurely cruising, but strong enough to be a challenging factor during races. Commercial barges are restricted to a clearly marked channel, so staying out of their way is easy.

Driving time from the St. Louis metropolitan area is 30-45 minutes.

The club, formed by a group of sailing enthusiasts and incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1954, is open from late April to mid-November When the club is open, cruising is available anytime during the week. Races take place on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons, with a social hour following.

Feel free to visit Valley, tour the facilities and meet our members. Members are always interested in helping others get started, and are willing to advise you about boats, safe boat-handling and racing. Contact us to take you for a sail soon.
