Leukemia Cup Regatta - May 2004
                       at Carlyle Sailing Association
Three Comets went on the road to participate in the Leukemia Cup Regatta at Carlyle Sailing Assoc.:
Nelson Laffey and Tom Lester, Jerry Chapman and Ben Murphy, Greg Polanik and Corina Iukovici.
We had to race using handicap scoring, because we didn't have 5 Comets to make up a fleet (sigh).

Saturday we had 3 races, with pretty strong winds. Unfortunately Jerry who had 2 very good races,
broke his mast just before the 3rd race, so he had to go in. On Sunday, although he borrowed a
mast, he couldn't make it fit and had to retire from the regatta.

Sunday came with even stronger winds - 25 to 35 knots! Many boats did not go out at all but
Greg and Corina felt they can handle it and went out for an exhilarating race. It was a hair raising
race - 2 laps that seemed to last forever - but they managed to finish it (while many other boats
were capsizing around them). They placed 1st in the category and Jerry and his crew finished 3rd.

Below is an International 14, one of the three that raced in the regatta and were on the same
course as ours.

Quite an exciting boat! Both days we watched it capsizing often...

The Leukemia Cup Regatta is not only a well worthy cause to raise money for
by participating in the regatta, but it's also a very nice and well organized regatta.
Friday night, Greg Fisher was there giving advice to interested sailors.
And Saturday night there was a great party with a band and dancing and beer
and rum and sailing talk. What can be better?!

Come and join us next year!!!
